The 5th Annual Tygerberg Heritage Festival will be taking place this weekend on Saturday 14 October from 1pm to 4pm and Sunday 15 October from 2pm to 5pm. Both events will be taking place at Parow High School, Voortrekker Road, Parow.

The Festival Day and Tygerberg’s Talent Finals on Saturday 14 October from 1pm to 2pm has an exciting line up of dance and music performances, African fashion show, food from across Africa and much more!! While the next day, Sunday 15 October, from 2pm to 5pm is an opportunity for diverse football teams to compete in the 5th Tygerberg All Nations Five A Side Football Tournament.

The Tygerberg Heritage Festival recognises and celebrates Tygerberg’s vibrant cultural diversity and promotes racial reconciliation.  The Festival is committed to ‘building bridges’ between all individuals, communities and organisations within the Tygerberg and Cape Town areas irrespective of race, gender, social, economic, educational and cultural backgrounds.

Taking part in the Tygerberg’s Talent Finals 2017 are 13 finalists comprising of 53 diverse individuals/ groups shortlisted from auditions in Middestad Mall, Parow Centre and our Learners audition which involved 3 high schools (Parow High School, Parow/ Manyano High School, Khayelitsha / Delft Technical High, Delft). They will demonstrate a wide variety of performances ranging from singing (rap, hip hop, gospel, etc), dancing (hip hop, African, etc) and other artistic displays to get the chance to be crowned as the 2017 winner.

The Talent Show combined with the Festival day celebrations will provide a Saturday afternoon full of great entertainment for the whole family. Other activities lined up include a unique fashion show by learners from Parow High School, Parow and Manyano High School, Khayelitsha; Tygerberg’s Cooks off with 3 teams given the same ‘surprise’ 5 key ingredients from across Africa to make a ‘signature’ meal within 20 minutes (sponsored by Checkers Shoprite); West African Talking Drum taster demo; Somali Henna Painting; ‘Leave Your Mark’ Art Session and many more activities for all to join. Tickets cost R5 donation per person (under five years free).
Sponsored by Protea Toyota, Tygerberg’s Talent 2017 cash prizes will be awarded to the winner (R3,000), runner up (R2,000) and second runner up (R1,000). While the rest of the finalists will receive goodie bags.


Sibuyiselo Dywili, One of the Duo Opera Singers – Piano Forte said: “Even though we came second for Tygerberg’s Talent 2016, the amazing & lifetime opportunity that we have had to date has been so worth it!  We have performed to more diverse audiences to standing ovations and already signed up to a show at the Collective Arts Theatre in Bellville for next year February 2018 as the major act.  We are so grateful for the experience and support we’ve had to date”.

Kemi Adebayo, Executive Director for Tygerberg Heritage Festival said: “We excitedly once again look forward to the amazing talents from our finalists.  Our talent show goes beyond a one off event.  Each year, we mentor and work with a few of our finalists to give them much needed exposure and for them to earn income.  Last year, we had Zolani Mahola from Freshly Ground mentor 3 of the 2016 finalists.  We are counting on the people of Tygerberg area for support as always”.

Abdulhakim Husein, Youth Coordinator for Somali Association of South Africa (SASA) said: “The Tygerberg All Nations Five A Side Football Tournament is a unique opportunity to build relationship between all communities.  The Somali Community has always participated in the tournament since it was started and we look forward to winning this year’s trophy as winner!”.


The Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) is proud to be one of the organisers of the Tygerberg Heritage Festival. Additional organisers are; Bold Moves and MES. Furthermore, there is support from the Great Tygerberg Partnership, Protea Toyota (Bellville), Middestad Mall, Parow Centre, Celeb Theatre, Somali Association of South Africa and other local businesses and community organisations.
