JOB TITLE: FIELDWORKER
The VRCID is a non-profit company with the goal to maintain a clean, safe, and sustainable environment within a specific geographical area (Bellville and Parow). The Social Development department is responsible for the coordination and integration of social development services towards adults and children living, working, and begging on the streets.
Knowledge and experience in the homeless sector will be an advantage as an applicant. Due to the risk factors, needs of the community, and the needs of the Social Development team – we are aiming to appoint a male fieldworker.
The VRCID Fieldworker should possess the following qualities:
- Be a highly self-motivated, independent, person-centred individual.
- Be punctual, responsible, accountable, and reliable, as you will be the example for many clients, partners, and the social team in their actions and conduct.
- Have an engaging, non-judgemental manner focused on motivation and support as forms of people management, integration, and leadership.
- We are seeking a candidate who is passionate about the care and protection of the homeless, with an understanding of what the sector entails.
- Efficient administrative capacity and experience managing a team of social service officials will be beneficial.
Commencement date: as soon as possible, but not later than 5 January 2026.
Requirements for the Position:
- Experience/understanding of the homeless sector
- Valid driver’s licence will be advantageous
- Preferably live in the northern suburbs as there is regular after-hours and weekend work
- After-hours availability for emergencies, outreaches, and meetings or events
- Proficient in MS Office, email, and social media
- Ability to work independently
- Strong administration skills
- Strong relationship-building skills
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and public speaking skills
- An excellent work ethic and professional conduct
- Need to be physically able to walk far distances and stairs daily
Duties and Responsibilities of the Position
- Lines of reporting
- The fieldworker will report to the Deputy Social Development Manager, who will be their supervisor. They also report to the Social Development Manager.
- Administration
- Participate in network or partnership meetings
- Support in logistical and administrative tasks of Change Readiness and Work Readiness projects
- Supervise and support social service fieldwork peer-partner teams and students
- Monthly statistics to be completed
- Perform administrative duties related to individual clients and the group work engagements, including handling correspondence, emails, and telephone queries from stakeholders and the public
- Meet with other VRCID operational staff on a regular basis to take note of and discuss issues pertaining to street people and their movements within the VRCID
- Community Development Projects/income-generating projects for homeless and unskilled people
- Operational and administrative support where necessary (e.g., Waste Picker Project, Garden Project, Give Responsibly campaign)
- Mentoring and support (administrative and operational)
- Operational support to fieldwork
- Stand-in outreaches to the homeless if required and referrals to necessary NGOs/shelters or other services
- Operational support to shelters that the VRCID works with
- Operational support in terms of homelessness to other VRCID staff
- Manage daily walk-in clients to VRCID offices; refer for appropriate services or complete the intake screening
- Overall fieldwork duties
- Daily fieldwork in Parow & Bellville
- Weekly & ad hoc meetings
- Relationship-building with clients and stakeholders
- Do intake screenings, assessments, and referrals
- Weekly group work at partnering organisations
- Support in creating, planning, and executing community-based events and projects
- Be a mentor and leader to the peer-partners project
- Collection and distribution of donations
- Facilitate & coordinate after-hours emergency services
- Attend outreaches during the day and after hours, when required
- Attend to complaints in the various outreach areas, when required
